Community Development and Facilities

  • Bellmead Lions Park: Since 1959, the Lions Club has invested heavily in the development of Bellmead Lions Park. Contributions included funds for the first ballfields in the 1960s through proceeds from the "Fun Frolics" events, which were held annually from 1960 to 1968. To date, the park features four lighted baseball fields, concessions, restrooms, and playgrounds.
  • Community Center and Swimming Pool: In 1970, the club facilitated the creation of the Bellmead Civic Center and its swimming pool, contributing one-third of the costs through their fundraising efforts. This project was partially funded through a HUD grant, with Lion C. E. Loveless leading the initiative.

Public Safety and Support

  • Fire Department Equipment: In 1975, the Lions Club donated $200 towards the purchase of a fire truck for the Bellmead Fire Department, part of a broader campaign that raised approximately $5,000 for this critical need.
  • Police Department Initiatives: Over the years, the Lions Club has provided funds and resources to support the Bellmead Police Department, including contributions to public safety campaigns.

Youth and Education

  • Scholarships for Local Students: Since 1968, the Lions Club has provided scholarships to students from La Vega and Connally High Schools, enabling them to attend vocational and higher education institutions. Each year, these scholarships amount to thousands of dollars.
  • School Support: The Lions Club has supported educational programs for area schools like La Vega, Connally, and Axtell ISDs through donations and volunteerism.

Community Programs and Fundraisers

  • Annual Fundraising Events: Since its inception, the club has hosted events such as the Bellmead Christmas Parade (since 1972), youth rodeos, pancake suppers, and the "Fun Frolics" variety shows. These efforts raised between $8,000 and $10,000 annually, which were reinvested into the community.
  • Holiday Contributions: Through their "Storybook Christmas" program and collaborations with the Salvation Army and Caritas, the club has donated food, gifts, and essential items to families in need during the holiday season.

Vision and Accessibility

  • Eye Care Programs: The Lions Club provides eye exams and glasses to children in need and collects used glasses and hearing aids for redistribution. These programs have been ongoing since the club's early years.
  • Texas Lions Camp: Since 1953, the Lions Club has sponsored local children with disabilities to attend the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville. The camp offers tailored activities at no cost to the families.

Revival in 2024

After a period of dormancy, the Bellmead Lions Club was reconstituted in 2024 with renewed vigor and a commitment to continue its tradition of service. The reformed club is focused on expanding its impact, fostering community engagement, and addressing modern challenges while honoring its historic contributions.

The Bellmead Lions Club has raised and reinvested hundreds of thousands of dollars into the community since its founding. Now reestablished, the club looks forward to continuing its proud legacy of service under the motto: "It's Great to be a Lion!"
