    When do I need a permit

 Building Permit Process Flow Chart (Basic Steps)

 

  1. Pre-Application
    • Research zoning, building codes, and permit requirements
    • Collect and organize all your information for the application
    • Optional: Pre-application meeting to discuss the overall project
  2. Application Submission
    • Submit completed permit application form
    • Attach required documents (e.g., site plan, blueprints, engineering reports)
    • Pay permit application/review fees
  3. Application Review
    • Zoning review
    • Building code compliance review
    • Site layout / fire / public works (if applicable)
  4. Corrections or Revisions (if needed)
    • Applicant responds to comments or requested changes
    • Resubmit updated plans
    • Re-review: If still lacking, additional comments provided
  5. Permit Approval
    • Once all departments approve, the permit is issued
  6. Permit Issued
    • Install erosion controls, if required
    • Construction may begin
  7. Inspections During Construction
    • Call to schedule
    • Site plan components (setbacks, driveway location, etc.)
    • Foundation inspection
    • Framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC
    • Final inspection
  8. Final Approval
    • Request final building code inspection
    • Work completed or corrections made
    • Pass final inspection

9.    Certificate of Occupancy (CO) (if required)

    • Apply for CO
    • Building Official and Fire Marshall approve
    • CO issued
